Squalicum’s Kate Truemper is one of three captains on the Storm’s girls swimming team. The incoming senior made her first splash for the Bellingham Bay Swim Team in fourth grade but stepped away in sixth grade.
She decided to return as a freshman in high school to join her older sister Lucy Truemper.
“As the little sister, I want to be just like my older sisters,” Truemper said. “My first practice at Squalicum, my sister and I swam a 50 backstroke to see who was faster.”
Truemper competed in the 200 medley relay, 200 free relay and 100 backstroke at the 2023 2A state swim meet. Her goal this season is to drop around seven seconds and earn a state medal.
Before the state meet, she hopes she can provide a welcoming environment to the Storm squad.
“We are really inclusive,” Truemper said. “We have people from different backgrounds and love to have fun. I have a bunch of friends joining the swim team.”
As Truemper enters her final year in high school, she reflects on competing with the Storm.
“Swim helped me get my jobs as a lifeguard and a swim coach,” Truemper said.
Besides swimming, Truemper competes in track and field and partakes in sports medicine, the American Sign Language club and a book reading club.
