Seventy-five years ago, ski and snowboarding filmmaker Warren Miller introduced audiences to new way of engaging with snowsports. His production company has since released a new film each year, capturing athletes’ passion and skill in locations across the globe.

The 2024 installment, “Warren Miller’s 75,” commemorates 75 years of the late filmmaker’s genre-defining movies. It premiered in Boulder, Colorado on Oct. 15 — what would have been Miller’s 100th birthday — and will screen in Bellingham at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8 at Mount Baker Theatre.

The 90-minute production includes 10 all-new segments, each packed with “unbelievable action and unexpected stories.” Filming locations range from the close-by (like Canada, Colorado and California) to the far-flung (like Finland, Japan and Austria). Additionally, featured athletes include snowboarders Shaun White, Zeb Powell and Toby Miller, as well as skiers Max Hitzig, Lexi duPont, Caite Zeliff and more.

Miller made his first film, “Deep and Light,” in the winter of 1949–50 on an 8-millimeter movie camera. Its release “ignited a new genre of filmmaking for the snowsports industry” — and although Miller himself passed away in 2018 at his home on Orcas Island, his legacy lives on through his production company, Warren Miller Entertainment (now owned by Outside, Inc.).

Released annually at the start of ski season, Miller’s snowsports films have become a tradition for hobbyists and professionals alike. Audiences can visit mountbakertheatre.com to learn more or purchase tickets for the Nov. 8 “Warren Miller’s 75” screening.
