JESSE’S PICKS

John Reischman and the Jaybirds
7–9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, New Prospect Theatre, 207 Prospect St.

John Reischman is a superb bluegrass mandolinist who has been on the road with his tight-knit group the Jaybirds for a long time. They’ve got seven albums and two Juno nominations under their belts. Their excellent lead singer and bassist Trisha Gagnon is from Chilliwack, British Columbia, so they’re practically locals. They’ll be at the New Prospect Theatre on Wednesday, Dec. 4.

Kelsey Mines and Elsa Nilsson Quartet
7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, Aslan Depot, 1322 N. State St.

Bassist Kelsey Mines is one of Seattle’s best. She was just here with the Naomi Moon Siegel group putting on an absolute clinic in the possibilities of jazz bass. She’s back in town leading a quartet with flutist Elsa Nilsson at Aslan Depot on Thursday, Dec. 5. That’s right, jazz flute. Not something we see a lot of around here.

Karl Blau
9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, The Shakedown, 1212 N. State St.

Singer-songwriter Karl Blau is a legend of the Anacortes DIY indie rock and folk scenes. He was one of the mainstays of the Knw-Yr-Own and K Records labels and has collaborated with all sorts of folks. He has moved to Philadelphia so his area shows may be slightly less frequent now, but he’ll be at The Shakedown on Friday, Dec. 6. His music ranges through all sorts of genres, held together by his unique vocal style.

Zepparella
8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, Bar Two Eleven, 211 E. Chestnut St.

Lyrically and visually, I’ve always thought of Led Zeppelin as the paragons of a certain type of obnoxious-rock-dude masculinity. Guitars as phallic symbols, that sort of thing. Given that context, an all-female Led Zeppelin tribute band isn’t just a tribute, it’s more like a reimagining. San Francisco’s Zepparella are coming to Bar Two Eleven on Saturday, Dec. 7, if you want to see for yourself what that could look like.
