WWU women’s soccer falls in GNAC Championship match

Vikings now need an at-large bid to secure spot at regionals

By Nick Zeller-Singh Sports Reporter

The Western Washington University women’s soccer team fell to Simon Fraser 1-0 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships final Saturday, Nov. 16 at Interbay Stadium in Seattle.

Western had 10 shots compared to Simon Fraser having seven shots in the first half, but neither team found the back of the net. However, the Red Leafs broke the scoreless draw in the 50th minute when Kiera Scott scored into the right corner. Alyssa Clark assisted the goal with a long through ball from midfield.

The Vikings had six shots in the second half but struggled to break through the Red Leafs’ defensive line. Western had three offsides called in the final 20 minutes.

Simon Fraser earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Championships in the West Region. Although Western is not guaranteed a spot, they are a favorite to grab one of the four at-large bids.

The Vikings will find out if they earned a spot and who their matchup will be against during the NCAA Selection Show at 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18.
