Whatcom charter review election results will come after certification

Large field, small margins mean clear winners are unlikely in preliminary vote counts

With many votes left to count and nearly 50 candidates running for a 15-member body, it’s too early to call the outcome of the charter review commission race.

Whatcom is one of only seven counties in the state that operate under home rule charter. The charter, essentially a local constitution, lays the framework for how the county is governed.

This election, voters from each of the five county council districts will choose three commissioners to represent them for a total of 15 commissioners. The commission will serve for up to a year, reviewing the charter and proposing amendments.

Because every voter in the county had the opportunity to pick three candidates, margins are too small and there are too many outstanding votes to be able to say with certainty who will make up the commission on the night of the election.

Cascadia Daily News will publish charter review commission results once they have been certified or appear to be final.
