JESSE’S PICKS
Chad Henry and the Setbacks
7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, The Blue Room, 202 E. Holly St., Unit 301
Chad Henry and the Setbacks are a new-ish local country/rock band who just put out an excellent debut EP, “Against The Tide.” They start from a classic Americana base, then incorporate some sweet harmonies and organ to give their music a little touch of blues and gospel. The release party is Thursday, Nov. 14 at the Blue Room and also features some other local favorites of the folk and roots-rock scene, Morgan McHugh and Friends for the Ghost.
Crystal Gayle
8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15 and 16, Skagit Casino, 5984 Darrk Lane, Bow
Crystal Gayle has been around since the early ’70s, blending traditional country with smooth pop to great effect. Her big hit was 1977’s “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue,” but my personal favorite was the soundtrack album she did in collaboration with Tom Waits for the Francis Ford Coppola film “One From The Heart” back in 1980. She’s in town for two shows at the Skagit Casino Friday, Nov. 15 and Saturday, Nov. 16.
Skelm, Spurr, Paperclip, Kurb, Cry of Mankin
Friday, Nov. 15, Make.Shift Art Space, 306 Flora St.
For a while, it seemed like hardcore had gone kind of dormant around here, but lately the kids are back in the pit in a big way. The show at Make.Shift on Nov. 15 is a five-band bill with each band playing 20 minutes each, tops, in classic hardcore fashion. Everett’s Skelm tops the bill, with locals including Paperclip and Spurr.
The Dusty 45s
Saturday, Nov. 16, The Old Edison, 5829 Cains Court, Bow
The Dusty 45s have been a big hit around here at community events like Downtown Sounds, playing a souped-up, widely appealing mix of rockabilly, honky tonk and swing. They’ve even been known to light an occasional trumpet on fire. I doubt they’ll light anything on fire indoors, but I’m sure they’ll be heating up the dance floor at the Old Edison on Nov. 16.
