Bellingham woman arrested after attacking man with baseball bat

Victim taken to hospital, woman booked for second-degree assault

A 33-year-old Bellingham woman was arrested for felony assault after injuring a man with a baseball bat early Monday morning, Nov. 4, according to a Bellingham Police report.

The victim was transported the victim to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center with “what appeared to be significant injuries to his head and face,” according to police.

Jessica Whitis was booked into Whatcom County Jail and charged with second-degree assault and felony harassment.

Bellingham police responded to reports of an adult female attacking a male with a baseball bat at an apartment on Studio Lane at 9:12 a.m. Monday.

Police found the injured victim not far from the apartment complex, where he told officers Whitis attacked him with a bat and then threatened to go get a knife, according to police. He then fled on a bicycle.

After being located, Whitis barricaded herself inside her apartment and “threatened violence toward the officers,” according to police. After crisis negotiators and chemical munitions were unsuccessful, SWAT team members entered the apartment and safely detained Whitis.

“I am grateful we were able to safely take Ms. Whitis into custody without injury to her or our officers,” Bellingham Police Chief Rebecca Mertzig said in a statement.
