JESSE’S PICKS

*For New Year’s Eve highlights, see Jesse’s Beat Goes On Column.

Hot Damn Scandal and Von Wildenhaus
9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, Wild Buffalo, 208 W. Holly St.

Hot Damn Scandal and Von Wildenhaus are two of the most distinctive groups this area has to offer. Hot Damn Scandal mix vintage jazz, blues, and Americana with a dark modern twist, while Von Wildenhaus offer a cinematic blend they describe as “easy listening for demons.” Either one would make for a great show all by themselves, but they’re teaming up for a double bill at the Wild Buffalo on Friday, Jan. 3. Sometimes the weeks right after New Years can be a bit of a dead zone for live music, so it’s great to see a big show like this filling the void.

Duo of Tombak & Lute
8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, Honey Moon, 1053 N. State St. Alley

There’s also an unusual show at Honey Moon that same night. The Seattle-based duo of August Denhard on the lute and Delaram Amiri on the tombak (an Iranian hand drum) combine to perform Baroque and early music with an Iranian twist. That’s quite the combination, and the Honey Moon should be a nice spot to experience it.

Energy Pyramid
9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, The Shakedown, 1212 N. State St.

Energy Pyramid had a huge year, rapidly establishing themselves as one of the absolute must-see acts in the Bellingham scene. The three piece play instrumental rock that nods to surf, psychedelica, and metal, without ever getting fully trapped in any one genre. Plus, they bring amazing visuals and dance performers with them wherever they go. They’ll be at the Shakedown on Saturday, Jan. 4 along with Witch Agony and Gallowmaker.

Cory Vincent and the Electric Band
8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, The Old Edison, 5829 Cains Court

For fans of bluesy, old-school rock and roll, Cory Vincent and the Electric Band have made themselves into one of the top draws in Skagit County. They’re going to be firing it up and getting down and dirty at the Old Edison on Saturday, Jan. 4.
