Sehome senior boys swim captain Koen Mathey is returning for his final season with the Mariners. Mathey finished last season as a part of the 200-yard medley relay team that placed 10th at state, and he also finished 19th in the 100-yard backstroke.
Mathey joined Sehome’s swim and dive team as a freshman because his parents recommended it as a sport he could do his entire life.
“Swimming has taught me that what you get out is what you put into the sport,” Mathey said. “You have to show up every day and want to improve.”
Despite losing a handful of seniors from last year’s roster, Mathey is excited for the upcoming season.
“We have a great young team and we should be really good again,” Mathey said. “We have a lot of fun at Sehome. It’s a good mix of fun and swimming.”
Mathey also played football at Sehome but has decided he does not want to pursue either sport in college. Since he will finish competing in swimming this year, Mathey hopes to reach the podium at state by placing top eight.
“I am naturally good at this sport,” Mathey said. “I saw a lot of progress in these four years.”
