A Bellingham man was transported to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center for treatment after he was hit by a train early Thursday morning.

At 1:38 a.m., Bellingham police officers were called to the 100 block of E. Pine Street after a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train conductor called 911 to report the train had struck a person on the tracks, said Megan Peters, the public information officer at the Bellingham Police Department.

Because of the thick fog, the train was reportedly traveling at 25 mph and blared its horn to warn the person on the tracks about the train’s approach, Peters said.

The victim appeared to have been hit by the handrail/ladder of the engine and was flung toward the east side of the tracks into a nearby ditch, Peters said.

Officers found the victim conscious and alert, and were able to provide aid until first responders with the Bellingham Fire Department arrived on scene, Peters said. The victim was then transported to the hospital for treatment.
