Lummi Nation, a 1B school with 90 kids enrolled, hosted 2A Sehome High, which has more than 830 kids enrolled, in the season opener for boys basketball.

Despite being the smaller school, the Blackhawks won 65-34 against the Mariners.

“There were some moments that flowed really well and other moments where we had some tough possessions and breakdowns on the defensive end,” coach Jerome Toby Sr. said.

“Sehome is a good team and Brad Jackson is one of the best coaches in the state. Coach J is a great mentor for me and I thank him for coming out and bringing a big school to play us,” he continued.

Lummi had a hot start in the first four minutes of the first quarter, taking a 12-2 lead. During that run, Lummi’s Trevon Lee scored seven points, Jerome Toby Jr. scored three and Karson Revey made a putback layup.

“The boys are welcoming all challenges,” Toby Sr. said. “They are hungry and motivated.”

Toby Jr. led the Blackhawks with 19 points, two rebounds and two assists. Dyson Edwards had 14 points and five assists.

Sehome’s Xavier Kelley responded with four of the six points for the Mariners. Kelley finished with eight points.

In the second quarter, the two teams began with some physicality. Revey had a block, then traveled down the court, got fouled and made one of two free throws. On the next possession, Toby Jr. stole the ball, made a layup and received a technical foul for taunting.

Sehome’s Nolan Wright stepped up and made three of his eight total points in the second quarter. Lummi dominated the third quarter, going on a 14-0 run in the first five minutes.

“We knew at halftime we wanted a good start,” Toby Sr. said. “We mixed it up with our defense and came out with press and a 2-3 zone, and it sparked their offense.”

Toby Jr. had nine points during the run while Lee made a mid-range shot and Tony Abrams made a three-pointer. Kelley broke the streak with a layup.

In the fourth quarter, both teams traded points until the reserves came in with about three minutes remaining. Sehome’s Quincy Tanovan finished the game with eight of his 10 points coming in the final minutes.

Lummi Nation (2-0) will host La Conner at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7. Sehome (1-1) will host Spectrum Community School at 5 p.m. on Dec. 7.
