Old Silvana Creamery recalling raw milk due to possible E. coli contamination

Recall affects 1/2 gallon, gallon Jim's Jerseys raw milk

By Annie Todd Criminal Justice/Enterprise Reporter

An Arlington-based creamery is voluntarily recalling containers of raw milk because of possible E. coli, or Escherichia coli, bacteria contamination, according to the Washington Department of Health.

Consumers who purchased Jim’s Jerseys raw milk produced by Old Silvana Creamery with a best-by date of Aug. 23 are being warned to not consume the milk and instead return the product to where they purchased it for a refund, according to a release issued by the DOH.

Old Silvana Creamery sells Jim’s Jerseys raw milk in 1/2 gallon and gallon containers at its farm store as well as various retailers across western Washington, including Community Food Co-op in Bellingham, and the former Cost Cutter, now IGA Market, in Blaine.

No illnesses related to the product recall have been reported, according to DOH.

Routine testing by the Washington State Department of Agriculture found the presence of E. coli in a raw milk sample, while independent testing of the product by Old Silvana Creamery did not find the bacteria, according to DOH. WSDA and Old Silvana Creamery are investigating the potential contamination.

People are advised to call a health care provider immediately if they get sick from E. coli. Symptoms include: severe diarrhea or diarrhea lasting more than three days, stomach cramps and blood in the stool. Usually, fever is not present.

People can also contact Old Silvana Creamery directly at 425-268-7961 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. if they have questions about the recall.
