David Paul Henson was born on August 16, 1986 in Bellingham, WA. His parents, Molly McLaughlin and Steve Henson, welcomed him and loved him with all their hearts.
David experienced a brain injury at birth, causing developmental delays and communication impairments. He faced many challenges in life and his sensitive spirit often struggled in this world, which is a difficult place for those who are unique. Nevertheless, his family and devoted school friends were there to understand him. Despite the difficulties David faced he never lost his sense of humor and approached every challenge with strength and courage.
David amazed us with his quick wit and curiosity. He loved science and nature; he was artistic and brilliant at math—he could see patterns where others saw chaos. He graduated at the top of his class academically at Options High School in 2005. His sharp mind was matched by his kindness, humanity and his patient, generous soul.
David loved nature and the outdoors, hiking, backpacking, snorkeling in Hawaii, playing soccer, video games, computers, creating with Legos, collecting minerals, gemstones and coins, jets and military aircraft. He loved animals and had a special bond with the family cat, Rocky. David loved good food–especially the seafood buffet at the Hanalea Bay Hotel, sushi, dark chocolate, gelato and his mom’s blackberry pie. David’s independence manifested in his 30-day solo trip to Italy as a budding gourmand at age 19. Above all and anyone, he loved his brother.
David left us far too soon on February 2, 2024. He will be lovingly remembered and sorely missed by his parents, brother Craig, special friend Jon Hickey and extended family. Beloved David, your spirit, courage and strong determination to live life your way will forever live on in our hearts. We love you!
