The Whatcom Transportation Authority is seeking feedback on an interim waterfront service for Bellingham, with two new routes proposed to begin in fall 2024.

One proposed route, 46 Granary, would run from Bellingham Station to the Millworks Building on Cornwall Avenue six times a day. The proposed 47 Harbor Downtown route would run seven times a day from Bellingham Station to Millworks to Squalicum Harbor.

The service is “interim” in order to more quickly address new needs for bus routes on the waterfront, especially with the recent opening of the Millworks Building, according to an FAQ on WTA’s website. Millworks is home to 83 units of affordable housing and a child care center. Families began moving in to the apartments in May.

“We’ve been considering service to the Bellingham Waterfront for many years … the bus service we are proposing is not perfect and may not be ideal for everyone, but it is what we are able to provide right now, with our current buses and transit operators.”

The WTA Board of Directors will hold a public hearing on the service at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15. Members of the public can attend in person at 4011 Bakerview Spur or via Zoom.

Those unable to attend the meeting can provide written feedback to Planning Director Tim Wilder by 3 p.m. on Aug. 14 at customerservice@ridewta.com or (360) 788-9311.
