JESSE’S PICKS
The Unknowns
6–8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, Elizabeth Park, 2205 Elizabeth St.
The Unknowns have just returned from a tour of Europe, which as far as I know makes them possibly the only local group to do so since the pandemic. They’re back in town with a show at Elizabeth Park on Thursday, Aug. 15, where their cheerful blend of jazz, folk and pop should be the perfect soundtrack to a summer evening.
Terminally Dumb, Manic Pixie Dream Boat and Cold Sludge
8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, Make.Shift, 306 Flora St.
Olympia trio Manic Pixie Dream Boat are making their Bellingham debut at Make.Shift on Saturday, Aug. 17. It just so happens that I played a show with them in Olympia a couple years ago, and I can vouch for them: excellent high-energy guitar noise pop songs, a ton of stage presence and real nice people. It’s great to see them making it all the way up here for a show. The bill also includes a rare appearance by reclusive Bellingham bedroom-pop genius Cold Sludge, and local punkers Terminally Dumb.
Cape Flattery
3–5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, Kulshan Trackside, 298 W. Laurel St.
Sunday afternoons at the Kulshan Trackside stage are devoted to a mix of jazz and folk. Cape Flattery, performing there the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 18, are one of the best of the bunch on the folk side this year, offering a winning blend of Americana, bluegrass and country, with two strong lead singers trading off from one song to the next.
