Pedestrian dies after being struck by train in Mount Vernon

Individual's identity is not yet released, pending family notification

A pedestrian died shortly after midnight Tuesday, April 2, after being struck by a train in Mount Vernon.

At 12:23 a.m., Mount Vernon Police Department received a report of someone hit by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) train at the South Third Street and Montgomery Street railroad crossing in Mount Vernon, according to a news release.

Police and EMS responded and found the deceased individual, whose identity is not being released until their family is notified. The investigation revealed the southbound train struck the pedestrian as they attempted to cross the tracks, but it is too early to determine the individual’s intent, the news release stated.

Mount Vernon police and BNSF Railway Police Department are jointly investigating the incident.
