The Western Washington University women’s soccer team lost a pivotal road match, 2-0, to the No. 2 nationally ranked Colorado School of Mines on Thursday, Sept. 14 at Stermole Soccer Stadium.
Junior forward Reese McDermott scored both goals for the Orediggers, netting one in the fifth minute and another in the 13th.
Western (2-2) had seven shots in the game, but just two on goal. The Colorado School of Mines (4-0-1) had 11 shots and four on goal. Both teams saved two shots.
The Vikings were ranked No. 1 in the nation in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Top 25 ahead of the season, but have since dropped out of the rankings.
Western now returns for a two-game home stand, first facing Sonoma State (2-1-1) at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 18 at Harrington Field. Simon Fraser (1-0-1) then comes to town for another 7 p.m. game on Thursday, Sept. 21 for its first league match.
