More than 4,000 pieces of children’s art have filled the windows of downtown Bellingham businesses this month.

May is Arts Education Month in Washington and serves as an opportunity for children to showcase their work outside the classroom. Allied Arts of Whatcom County is responsible for pairing schools and businesses to fill the windows.

This is the 23rd annual year, and during April, schools, restaurants and businesses downtown had the opportunity to sign up. This year, 35 schools and 43 businesses were able to pair together, said Alicia Gomez-Morales of Allied Arts.

The First Friday of May kicked off the celebration of the arts. Students and the community are encouraged to walk Bellingham using an interactive map. Various events and performances will be happening around town, as well.

“Being creative is an important part of your education,” Gomez-Morales said. “It allows them to release that creativity that you don’t usually get as an adult.”
