One person has been detained after law enforcement responded to reports of shots fired sometime after 8 p.m. in downtown Bellingham Friday night, police confirmed.

No injuries are known at this time, but officers will check the hospital, Bellingham Police Lt. Claudia Murphy told Cascadia Daily News.

A witness indicated they saw a person shooting, Murphy said. No descriptions are available at this time.

Law enforcement responded around Railroad Avenue and Magnolia Street, and Holly Street was temporarily blocked by patrol cars. Washington State Patrol, Bellingham Police’s Bearcat armored vehicle and a rescue vehicle were also on scene.

“The officers did an amazing job getting that scene contained and finding the person of interest so quickly,” Bellingham Police tweeted Friday night.

Businesses in the downtown core were temporarily on lockdown, according to multiple comments on a Facebook post by Whatcom Breaking News.

This is an active police investigation downtown and information is limited, Murphy said.

This is a developing story.
