A 40-year-old man was killed after being struck by a vehicle early Saturday morning on Lakeway Drive, Bellingham Police said.

At 12:36 a.m. Sept. 10, Bellingham Police were called to the scene of a collision at the 1600 block of Lakeway Drive.  An investigation showed Jacob M. Saville, 36, of Bellingham, drove his Ford F-150 pickup truck off the roadway and struck a 40-year-old male pedestrian, knocking over a light pole, according to a police news release.

Witnesses saw Saville get out of the truck shortly after the collision, police said. Officers found the severely injured 40-year-old male after arriving on scene, and Bellingham Fire Department personnel pronounced the man deceased at the scene, according to the release.

Police are waiting for notification of next of kin before publicly identifying the victim.

A preliminary investigation by BPD Crime Scene Investigators and traffic officers showed Saville was under the influence of alcohol and determined probable cause for vehicular homicide, according to police.

Lakeway Drive remained closed from Puget Street to Woburn Street for 12 hours, overnight and into midafternoon Saturday, to complete the investigation and have the light pole removed from the roadway.

After being released from the hospital, Saville was arrested for vehicular homicide and booked into the Whatcom County Jail.
