Squalicum, Bellingham dominate three-team meet with Mount Baker

Track and field season now in full swing

The Squalicum boys and Bellingham girls track and field teams claimed wins Wednesday, March 30 at Civic Stadium in a three-team meet with Mount Baker.

The Storm boys racked up 99 points, winning six events. The Bayhawks girls scored 69 points.

Squalicum swept the top three spots in the boys 100-meter dash with junior Andre Korbmacher placing first (10.79 seconds), senior Leyton Smithson (10.94 seconds) and senior Josh Bates (11.26 seconds) in third. Korbmacher and Bates both set personal records in the event.

In the girls 100-meter, Bellingham sophomore Chayse Flick-Williams placed first with a time of 12.89 seconds. Squalicum sophomore Hazel Gleckman (13.48 seconds) placed second and Bellingham senior Lily Koplowitz-Fleming (13.96 seconds) finished third.

Squalicum won both sides of the 200-meter run. Freshman Marcus Nixon finished in 24.58 seconds and freshman Hannah Bates set a personal record with a time of 28.36 seconds.

Mount Baker found some success in the 4×200 relay of Eryna Collins, Tyla Olson, Dylan Stephan-Remy and Rylee Ross. The four placed first with a time of 2:00.04, a personal record.

In the field events, Mount Baker senior Megan Schmidt won the girls shot put with a throw of 26-05, a personal best. Bellingham junior Javen Livas won the boys shot put with a throw of 49-08.

Bellingham swept the triple jump with senior Jake McNeely placing first on the boys side (38-07.75) and sophomore Genevieve Blum (34-06.25) on the girls side.

The next big meet on the schedule is the Birger Solberg Invite Saturday, April 9 at Civic Stadium. Sehome will host the meet featuring 31 other schools, including the locals of Bellingham, Blaine, Ferndale, Lynden Christian, Mount Baker and Nooksack Valley.
